Pre-Orders
A Note From Us
This pre-order model is something we’ve been thinking about for a long time.
At its heart, this is about looking after the grassroots of the hobby — because when the grassroots aren’t cared for, the hobby starts to fade. Plants, like communities, don’t thrive when everything is inaccessible, rushed, gated, or treated as disposable.
We’re going back to the values that built Nelson Plant Guy in the first place: community, accessibility, transparency, and genuine passion for plants.
Our loyal customers will always remain important to us and continue receiving their perks, because long-term support matters. But we also believe every customer is more than just a transaction number. Every order represents someone who loves plants just as much as we do.
This pre-order model isn’t about hype or quick turnover. It’s about sharing the journey, growing plants properly, and helping keep this hobby welcoming and sustainable for years to come.
For the NPG team, this is still very much a passion — and we’re genuinely glad to have you along for the journey.

Pre-Order Q&A
What is a pre-order?
A pre-order allows you to secure a plant before it’s ready for dispatch.
Your plant is grown on by us first — not rushed — so it’s healthy, acclimatised, and ready for its next home when it leaves us.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Why do pre-orders take longer?
Because good plants take time.
Many pre-orders begin as tissue culture or young starter plants that require deflasking, acclimatisation, and grow-on time before they’re strong enough to travel and thrive.
We ship plants when they’re ready — not simply because the calendar says so.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Why are pre-orders cheaper?
Pre-orders help us:
* Purchase plants in larger quantities
* Plan grow-on space efficiently
* Reduce unnecessary waste and losses
Those savings are reflected in the pre-order pricing without compromising plant quality or health.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
When will my plant be dispatched?
Dispatch dates are estimates only.
Plants are shipped:
* When they’re healthy and established
* In the order pre-orders were placed, as stock becomes ready
Some plants naturally grow faster than others, even within the same release.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Will I receive updates?
Yes.
We love sharing the growing process and will provide updates through email and social media whenever there’s meaningful progress to share.
Individual plant updates are not always possible, but we’ll keep customers informed wherever practical.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Can I choose my plant?
Where possible, yes.
If multiple plants are available within a release:
* Selection is typically offered in order of purchase
* Selection may occur via photos, descriptions, or allocated grades
* If your preferred option is unavailable, we’ll offer the next closest option available
If no suitable option is available, a replacement, refund, or store credit may be offered in line with our terms.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
What about variegation?
Variegation is often a gradual reveal, particularly in young plants.
We do not send plants displaying low-grade or commercially unviable variegation. If a plant does not meet our internal standards at dispatch, it will not be fulfilled and an appropriate resolution will be offered.
Every plant is unique, and expression may continue developing over time.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Can I cancel my pre-order?
Pre-orders cannot be cancelled for:
* Change of mind
* Impatience
* Reasonable grow-on delays
If we are genuinely unable to supply your plant, a replacement, refund, or store credit will be offered in line with NZ consumer law.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
What happens during bad weather?
Plant safety always comes first.
If weather conditions are unsafe for shipping, dispatch may be delayed temporarily to help avoid stress or damage during transit.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
How are plants packaged?
Plants are packaged securely with preventative measures for weather fluctuations and possible courier delays.
Our priority is always plant health and safe arrival.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
What if my plant arrives stressed?
Please contact us within 24 hours of delivery if you have any concerns.
Minor transit stress such as slight yellowing or bent leaves can be normal after shipping and often settles quickly.
Early communication allows us to help promptly if needed.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Should I repot immediately?
No.
Plants require time to acclimatise after shipping and adjust to their new environment before repotting or major changes are made.
Care guidance will be provided where appropriate.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
What if I’m unsure about care?
Please ask.
There are no silly questions when it comes to live plants, and we’re always happy to help where we can.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Is this covered by NZ consumer law?
Yes.
Nothing within our pre-order process limits your rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993.
